ABSTRACT

The path followed after the Doctorate, or its main aspects, can be found in the four volumes of this work of Free Docentship. Our option for a critical discussion of our own work encouraged us to offer part of our individual or group production that neatly represents our effort to reflect on the work issue in Geography. Moreover, it is presented what we have been highlighted in the last years, that is, the great deal of difficulties to understand the wide range of relations linked to work regarded as a result of the structural redefinitions through which the capitalist system is passing worldwide and its current restructural unfoldments.

It is from this process that the new identities of work appear. In terms of territory, they are expressed within the plasticity that constantly remakes itself and surpasses the limits of the rural, and the urban, the country and the city. The same process continuously redefines the professions, licenses, specializations, migrations, spatial limits of relations and the landmarked territorialities of the class struggle, without considering the most perverse frame of the productive re-structuring of capital in the twenty first century, that is, the structural unemployment or the disposal of work. On the other hand, it intensively modifies the profiles of men and women that work and reveal capability and strength to fight capitalism. We have given full attention to this since our search for those men and women who are, in this twenty first century, able to transform and emancipate society and give a different historical course beyond capital, has helped us to recognize the theoretical and conceptual limitations because the resistance struggles and the main parades against capitalism are not restricted to proletariat. Thus, the extension and the complexity of underemployment, unemployment (unemployed), peasantry, much more than their theoretical, historical, geographical and political meanings, get an outstanding place in the class struggle domain and suggest the struggle for territory. This struggle also expresses contents against capitalism, such as, agrarian reform against latifundium, housing claims, food and energy sovereignty, fighting genetically modified crops, monopolies, etc.

Therefore, we believe that the dynamics of work requires giving priority to this way of self-criticism, methodically and theoretically, as an option able to enhance understanding of the wholeness of work. That is, we underline the need to rethink the frames, the references and the meanings, a priori, of work and the working class. Thus, a deep debate on the wholeness of work from the class perspective is necessary.

The theoretical importance that we bestow to the centrality of work requires the assumption of its political, ontological, and economical meaning, and it also urges us to decipher the different spatial and territorial identities of the working being, in time and in space, specially in this twenty first century, a time of intense precariousness, uncertainty, weakening large number of men and women and their revolutionary capability that directly reflects on the social movements to which they are entailed.
