The city is named after President Prudente de Morais,
the first civilian national president. It has been considered
a city that offers a good quality of life in the hinterlands.
It has an infrastructure that can receive investments
of any size. Agricultural business, commerce, a few industries,
and four university institutions have been responsible
for the economical life in the city. By the way, it is
re-known as a center for the quarter-mile horse and a
major center of the "nelore" cattle.

Education, with over 130 educational establishments, from
kindergarten to university, has been distinguished as
an important component of the city cultural life. Unesp,
a public university, plus the others private institutions
count more than 20,000 students enrolled with more than
110 different undergraduate and graduate programs.

Culture
and Leisure
According to the magazine Exame, Presidente Prudente is
among the 100 best cities to live and to invest in Brazil.
For the moments of leisure the city offers "Parque
do Povo" (the Park of the People), "Cidade da
Criança" (the Child's City) and Sesc Thermas.
Athletics has had great incentive in the city. The National
Festival of Theater and the activities of the Popular
Network of Culture play an important role to disseminate
Presidente Prudente culture.

Demographic Info
The population as of 2004 was 206,000 and the total area
is 563.62 km². The elevation is 475 m (1558.4 ft) above
sea level. |
The University
FCT-Unesp has established the Presidente Prudente campus in 1989, although
its origin goes back to 1959 when it was started as a
Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters. Nowadays, FCT-Unesp
Presidente Prudente campus is one of the 25 university units
which are distributed throughout São Paulo state.

Its mission is to be an important unit of Unesp with recognized
academic presence in the local, statual, national and international
academic system, consistently based on strong connections
among teaching, research and university extension, and
also to accomplish its commitment with social, scientific,
ethical, cultural and environmental issues. FCT offers
undergraduate programs (courses) such as Geography, Mathematics,
Cartographic Engineering, Statistics, Physical Education,
Physiotherapy, Pedagogy, Computer Science, Environmental
Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and Architecture and
Urbanism. It also offers stricto sensu graduate programs
in Geography, Cartographic Sciences, Education, and Physiotherapy
besides several lato sensu specialization courses in different
areas.
Besides teaching, the faculty professors develop many
researches and extension projects of intense relationship
with the society. The existence of several agreements,
the production of its laboratories, and the dedication
of the staff make this unit a place of pleasant conviviality
with great career opportunities and also an irradiation
center of regional development.
